Essay Competition

 
Dear Students & Guardians,
 
Have you participated in community service over the year? Do you have a combined grade point average of 3.75 in core academic classes? If so, you may want to apply to be our Glenwood Middle Carson Scholars nominee.
 
What is a Carson Scholarship:
The Carson Scholars Fund awards $1,000 college scholarships to students who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. Scholarship winners are awarded an Olympic-sized medal. Previous winners of Carson Scholarships are eligible to reapply for Carson Scholar Recognition annually.
 
Glenwood is allowed to nominate one student to move forward to compete to become a Carson Scholar recipient. To select one Glenwood student to be our nominee to move forward to compete to become a Carson Scholar there will be a school-wide essay competition.
 
Glenwood Essay Competition Eligibility:
  • Applicants must be a Glenwood student in grades 6-8
  • GPA Requirements - Students must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.75 or above on a 4.0 scale in the combined academic subjects: English, Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages. Applicants will be required to submit their 1st quarter report card for the current school year.
  • Applicants must display humanitarian characteristics through community service.
 
Step 1: Applicants must submit their essay and community service list to Ms. Nelson School Counselor no later than Friday, November 17th, 2023. Applications can be submitted to Student Services directly or by emailing lanae_nelson@hcpss.org. Please include "Carson Scholarship Essay" in the subject line.
 
Step 2: The Glenwood selection committee will review the submitted essays with the list of community service activities.
 
 

Application 2023-2024

PART ONE - ESSAY
  • Essay must be typed and double-spaced
  • Use 12-point font Times New Roman
  • Include your name, grade, date, and your homeroom teacher
  • Choose one of two essay topics
  • 450-word minimum, 500-word maximum
Essay Topics – Choose one of two essay topics (450-500 words)
  1. Write about one of the biggest mistakes you have ever made. What important lessons did you learn from that mistake? How did making that mistake help improve who you are today?
  2. How do you define personal growth? Why is it important for people to strive to improve themselves?
Essays will be scored in the following areas:
  • CONTENT: An essay with ample information, including supporting details.
  • ORGANIZATION: An organized essay with a well-developed beginning, middle, and end.
  • STYLE: Interesting, varied, imaginative, and age-appropriate vocabulary.
  • MECHANICS & USAGE: Correct punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and paragraph distinction.
  • FOCUS: Appropriate information to make the reader clearly understand the ideas being presented.
 
PART TWO – COMMUNITY SERVICE
A Carson Scholar excels in academics and serves their community. Please list your current and past community service activities. A list is sufficient, but complete sentences are not necessary. Please include when and the length of time you worked on each community service activity.
