The purpose of this notification is to provide an update on the status of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in the drinking water at Bushy Park Elementary and Glenwood Middle Schools.
In 2024 the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) conducted water sampling at the water treatment system that supplies both Bushy Park Elementary and Glenwood Middle Schools. The results indicated the presence of PFAS at concentrations exceeding the future Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL).
Consistent with the response actions outlined in the previous memorandum, Building Maintenance has installed PFAS remediation systems at the water treatment systems. These systems were permitted, inspected, and approved by the MDE.
Following installation of the remediation systems, the HCPSS Office of the Environment collected follow-up water samples to verify system performance. Laboratory analysis of samples collected at the water treatment system serving Bushy Park Elementary and Glenwood Middle Schools did not detect PFAS above the laboratory reporting limits, indicating that the remediation systems are functioning as intended.
As a result of the successful implementation of the PFAS remediation systems:
- Bottled water previously provided for consumption will be discontinued and removed from the schools over the summer.
- Potable water fountains, bubblers, faucets, and other outlets will be placed back into service and flushed prior to the start of the school year.
- The HCPSS Office of the Environment will continue routine PFAS sampling to monitor water quality.
